Minnesota outfielder Max Kepler and three Twins relievers will miss this weekend’s three-game series in Toronto due to their vaccination status.
Kepler, Emilio Pagan, Caleb Thielbar and Trevor Megill are on the restricted list and returned to Minnesota after Thursday’s 3-2 loss to the Tigers in Detroit.
Canada requires all travelers entering the country to be vaccinated for COVID-19.
Kepler, 29, is batting .253 with six homers and 25 RBIs in 47 games this season.
“In my opinion, it’s sad that I can’t join the team, especially now where we’ve lost a couple of games,” Kepler told the Star Tribune. “Everyone needs to be together. It’s sad.”
Pagan, 31, is 1-2 with seven saves and a 3.00 ERA in 18 appearances.
Thielbar, 35, is 1-0 with a 5.59 ERA in 22 relief outings.
Megill, 28, is 1-1 with a 1.04 ERA in five bullpen appearances.
Minnesota promoted right-handers Jharel Cotton, Chi Chi Gonzalez and Ian Hamilton and outfielder Mark Contreras from Triple-A St. Paul to fill the openings.
Gonzalez is slated to start Friday’s game against the Blue Jays. The 30-year-old will be making his first big league appearance of the campaign and is 9-23 with a 5.64 ERA in 61 career appearances (47 starts) with the Texas Rangers (2015-16) and Colorado Rockies (2019-21).
Gonzalez is 2-2 with a 3.44 ERA in eight appearances (five starts) at Triple-A this season.
Cotton, 30, was 0-1 with a 1.35 ERA in four games with Minnesota earlier this season and the 26-year-old Hamilton has an 0.71 ERA in 10 appearances for St. Paul this season. Contreras, 27, went 0-for-2 in two games with the Twins earlier this season and is batting .234 with six homers and 20 RBIs in 38 games at Triple-A.
