Pinch hitter Jake McCarthy’s two-run, go-ahead single Wednesday night led the Arizona Diamondbacks past the host San Francisco Giants 3-2.

Arizona left fielder Stone Garrett, making his major league debut, hit two doubles, including one in the eighth inning that set up McCarthy’s decisive hit.

Diamondbacks starter Zach Davies pitched five effective innings and closer Mark Melancon prevented a third Giants walk-off win in four days with a scoreless ninth. Arizona won for the first time in the four-game series after dropping games Monday and Tuesday.

LaMonte Wade Jr. and J.D. Davis homered for San Francisco, the latter leading off the sixth inning and giving the hosts a 2-1 lead. The homers were No. 8 for both players, with half of Davis’ total coming in the short time since he was acquired from the New York Mets at the trade deadline.

Davis and Austin Slater had two hits each for the Giants, who saw a five-game winning streak come to an end.

Christian Walker singled with one out in the Arizona eighth, after which Garrett put the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with a double down the left field line.

Dominic Leone (3-4), the third Giants pitcher, got Cooper Hummel to fly out to shallow right field for the second out. McCarthy then came through with what turned out to be the game-winning hit, a liner to right field.

Garrett, 26, was promoted from Triple-A Reno before the game. He had an adventurous night that included an RBI double in the fourth inning for his first hit before reaching base again in the sixth on a catcher’s interference.

Garrett’s fourth-inning hit scored Walker, who had singled.

Walker finished with two hits and two runs for the Diamondbacks, who won despite getting out-hit 8-6.

Davies limited the Giants to one run on five hits. He struck six and walked two.

Giants starter Carlos Rodon likewise did not factor in the decision. He held Arizona to two hits and one run in six innings, striking out 11 and walking two.

Noe Ramirez (4-3), who picked pinch runner Mike Yastrzemski off second base to help quell a seventh-inning Giants threat, was credited with the win. Benefitting from a double play off the bat of Yastrzemski after allowing the leadoff batter to reach base in the ninth, Melancon earned his 17th save.
