Mitch McConnell has been the longest-serving Senate leader in the US. The Republican has been both majority and minority leader in the Senate for almost two decades. On Wednesday, the 82-year-old Republican said he would step down from the leadership post but remain in the Senate.
The Republican from Kentucky announced his decision in the well of the Senate. He said, “One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter.”
He added, “So, I stand before you today…to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.”
The Senate Minority leader said he would remain a Senator until his term ends on January 27 but will occupy “a different seat in the chamber.”
He said, “I still have enough gas in my tank to thoroughly disappoint my critics.”
He also noted that it remained important for America to be the world’s leader as envisaged by Republican President Ronald Reagan, under whose administration he began to serve the nation as a Senator.
McConnell became a Senator in 1985 and became the party leader in 2006. He won nine straight elections.
Although he worked with former President Donald Trump to bring in a conservative agenda, he had differences with him, leading to a significant fallout with Trump and his supporters after the January 6 attack.
Senator Mitch McConnell had a few recent health scares, including freezing twice at press conferences. He also suffered from a concussion when he fell during a hotel visit in Washington. He did not give a reason for stepping down from the leadership role but made a passing reference to the death of his wife, Elaine Chao’s youngest sister, Angelo. She had died in a traffic accident earlier in February.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell received a standing ovation after he completed his speech. Senate Majority Leader and New York Democrat Chuck Schumer shook hands with him, followed by several Democrats and Republicans.
