Reddit is losing its popularity as one of the most trafficked sites after many developers and moderators quit or made subreddits private or semi-private after the company made a manifold increase in billing. About eight thousand subreddits had taken place in a blackout, which affected millions of members. Now the makers of Minecraft, one of the most popular video games ever, have also quit Reddit.
On Tuesday, a tech lead at Mojang Studios posted on the r/Minecraft community that the changes introduced by the Reddit management made them feel that the site was no longer an “appropriate place to post official content” nor was it a place where they wanted to “refer” their “players to.”
The post also said that the Java team at Mojang will not post changelogs, nor will they share details of changes that would be made to versions of Minecraft on the subreddit. They also updated the post and said that the policy was not official for all of Mojang Studios, Xbox or Microsoft.
Microsoft owned Mojang Studios’ Minecraft is the world’s bestselling video game, according to the Guinness World Records. This popular game has sold over 230 million copies. There are more than 7.4 million members in its official subreddit, which is not expected to close.
Earlier in June, Reddit announced a drastic billing change. It increased the price that third-party developers had to pay to use the application programming interface (API) of the company. This new change in business policy has not gone down well with developers.
In a recent “blackout” over 8,000 Reddit communities took part and changed their reddits to either fully private or partially private. Some subreddits with huge web fan bases that took part include popular ones that have over 30 to 40 million members on the web. They include r/Funny, r/Music and r/Science, among others.
