Cal Fire provided an update on the Mountain Fire, which is raging 2 miles to the east of Gazelle Mountain and 8 miles to the southeast of the town of Gazelle, in Weed, California.
According to Cal Fire, a sensor aircraft estimated that the wildfire to be 1,464 acres. As of Saturday, at 7:25 a.m., the Mill Fire had consumed 3,921 acres. Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday night declared a state of emergency for Siskiyou County.
On August 31, 2022, I proclaimed a State of Emergency to exist in California due to an Extreme Heat Event. On September 2, 2022, the Mill Fire began burning in Siskiyou County where a Red Flag warning is in effect. The Mill Fire has exhibited extreme fire behavior and has burned more than 900 acres as of late this afternoon, quickly moved through portions of the City of Weed, caused civilian injuries and power outages, damaged or destroyed multiple structures and homes, forced road closures, and continues to threaten homes, structures and other critical infrastructure, and other portions of the City of Weed and surrounding communities, including Lake Shastina and Edgewood, necessitating the evacuation of more than 5,800 residents. Road Closures in the area, Highway 97 is closed.

According to The Associated Press, several people were hurt by a swiftly spreading wildfire that was raging in the Northern California town of Weed in Siskiyou County before Labor Day weekend. Firefighters are also battling a second wildfire that has scorched thousands of acres nearby.
The origin of the fire, which first broke out in an old mill building before spreading to neighboring vegetation, is still unknown.
