Mikaela Shiffrin took gold in the women’s giant slalom by 0.12 seconds at the world championships in Meribel, France, on Thursday.
It marks Shiffrin’s 13th world medal and seventh gold. It also comes one day after parting ways with longtime coach Mike Day.
Day, Shiffrin’s coach since 2016, chose to leave immediately after being informed that Shiffrin intended to make changes at the end of the season.
“It’s been definitely some high levels of stress these days,” said Shiffrin, 27. “It was very, very difficult today to keep the focus and keep the intensity on the right level.”
Federica Brignone of Italy took silver and Norway’s Ragnhild Mowinckel the bronze.
It was Shiffrin’s first gold at worlds since winning the combined event in Italy in 2021.
“I feel really emotional right now,” Shiffrin said. “It’s unbelievable, it’s 12 hundredths, it’s really a small margin. On the bottom I just went blind and was like, just ski faster. I don’t know how, just do it.”
