Miguel Cabrera had three hits and drove in two runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Detroit Tigers edged the visiting Cleveland Guardians 4-3 on Thursday.

Cabrera knocked in Jonathan Schoop, who smacked a one-out double off Trevor Stephan (2-2) and moved to third on a wild pitch prior to Cabrera’s walk-off hit.

Robbie Grossman had two hits and scored two runs for Detroit in the opener of a four-game series. Gregory Soto (2-2) was the winning pitcher, tossing an inning of scoreless relief, as the Tigers earned their second consecutive victory.

Detroit starter Tarik Skubal allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Owen Miller drove in two runs for the Guardians and Oscar Gonzalez had two hits in his major league debut. Konnor Pilkington, making his second major league start, gave up three runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. Eli Morgan didn’t allow a hit in three innings of scoreless relief.

The Tigers scored a run in the first when Grossman singled, moved up on a Cabrera walk and scored on Javier Baez’s single to right. Detroit left the bases loaded as Daz Cameron fouled out.

Detroit made it 3-0 in the second. The Tigers placed runners in scoring position with one out when Derek Hill singled and Grossman doubled. Schoop knocked in Hill with a sacrifice fly, and Cabrera drove in Grossman with a single.

Cleveland tied it up in the next inning. Oscar Mercado led off with a single and scored on Luke Maile’s double. Maile was erased on a fielder’s choice, but the Indians had two runners in scoring position with two outs with the aid of an error and a walk. Miller’s single to left-center knocked in Myles Straw and Amed Rosario.

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. Enyel De Los Santos entered in relief and struck out Baez, then induced a Jeimer Candelario popout.

Gonzalez hit a one-out double in the ninth, but Soto struck out Ernie Clement and got Mercado to fly out.
