Microsoft has launched a new version of its app store for Windows on the web, without much fanfare unlike other tech companies. The new web version has been designed to be better than the earlier one in ease of design and a new codebase has also replaced the earlier one.
Microsoft engineer Judah Gabriel explained the new web version on social media and posted, “The old site was a React codebase built on an obsolete UI framework.”
The engineer also said, “We created a fresh user experience with a thoughtfully designed interface, easier ways to discover new apps, modern web tech stack. I hope folks will find it useful.”
Although it will not replace the main Microsoft Store, the new design will make it easier for consumers to search for Window apps or Xbox PC games. These apps and games can be downloaded through the main Microsoft Store app on Windows.
Gabriel also said, “Think of this as the web front to the app store on Windows. They work together.”
Microsoft is looking to expand its apps and games beyond Windows. The European Union’s Digital Markets Act will come into force in 2024. Apple already added a USB-C port for the first time to its latest iPhone 15 for it to be in compliance with the EU Digital Markets Act.
Microsoft is hoping that the act would make companies such as Apple and Google open their mobile app stores. So, Microsoft is building an Xbox mobile gaming store in anticipation of a more open market.
Earlier this March, in an interview with the Financial Times, Xbox chief Phil Spencer said that the company wanted to be in a position that it could “offer Xbox and content from both us and our third- party partners across any screen where somebody would want to play” and more.
