Microsoft users get ‘blue screen of death’ after outages, CrowdStrike issue, shares fall, CWEB reports

Microsoft (MSFT) users awoke to a dismal Friday as they got a “blue screen of death” screen due to issues in CrowdStrike after an update of its Falcon software by the cybersecurity firm. There were huge global IT outages. Many airlines, banks, media conglomerates, healthcare providers, and other industries were badly affected. The outages have affected businesses rather than the computers of individual web fans. Shares of CrowdStrike fell by 8.57 and Microsoft fell by 0.37 percent after 8 a.m. PT.

CrowdStrike (CRWD) issued a software update that resulted in Microsoft systems crashing worldwide. Microsoft’s spokesperson confirmed to several outlets that several Windows systems worldwide had been affected by an update from CrowdStrike and that they were assisting customers in recovery.

CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said the cybersecurity company has deployed a fix and that the incident is “not a security incident or cyberattack.”

The F.A.A. said that American, United, and Delta have grounded flights. Asian and European airlines such as Japan Airlines, Air India, and Air France-KLM also reported cancelations and delays.

It is expected that businesses will take time to get back to normal, as they will need to manually intervene to fix each impacted device.

CrowdStrike is used by many global Fortune 500 companies. The Texas-based cybersecurity firm offers what is referred to as “endpoint security” through the cloud.

Earlier, Microsoft said Azure services and Microsoft 365 suite problems in the central U.S. region had been restored. The tech giant said this outage differed from the CrowdStrike one as it was related to Azure and not to the cybersecurity firm’s Falcon update.

CWEB thinks that all cyber firms should take more care when deploying or updating software, as one corrupted file can affect hundreds of thousands of businesses worldwide that use a handful of software and operating systems.
