Microsoft suggests EU contributed to CrowdStrike Outage, Mac remained immune due to walled system

If you wondered why systems that used the MaOS operating system remained immune to the glitches caused by the Falcon software update by CrowdStrike, while PCs using Microsoft Windows software were majorly affected, CWEB reports on this issue. Microsoft (MSFT) suggested that the European Union (EU) contributed to the outage of CrowdStrike, which caused the blue screen of death across millions of systems worldwide on Friday, according to a popular outlet. Most of the systems affected by the Falcon software update by CrowdStrike were using Microsoft Windows, but Apple’s Macs were unaffected.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft reached an agreement with the European Union to “give makers of security software the same level of access to Windows that Microsoft gets,” according to a Microsoft spokesperson. This suggests that Microsoft is reportedly pointing the blame at the EU. The European Union asked for other cybersecurity firms to get such access to prevent Microsoft from dominating and provide a level playing field.

The IT outage from CrowdStrike caused major breakdowns in operations in various industries, such as travel and transport, health, emergency services, financial institutions, and more. Many services were affected from Friday through the weekend.

Even on Monday, Delta Air Lines was impacted as 700 additional flights were canceled. Although CrowdStrike provided a solution for the technical glitch, removing it from PC operating systems is taking time, and some companies have considerably slowed down operations as they deal with the massive issue.

The WSJ also said, “In 2020, Apple told developers that its MacOS operating system would no longer grant them kernel-level access.”

Apple uses a walled-garden approach in its operating system and does not allow third-party security firms to update their devices by reaching its kernel level. Apple prevented the blue screen of death as it does not give such deep access to software from cybersecurity firms. Developers had to rewrite their software in such a way as to work on the existing MacOS without kernel-level access.

Although MacOs escaped the CrowdStrike fiasco, it does not mean Mac has blanket safety. It can still face attacks from different bugs or other problems.
