Microsoft (MSFT) co-founder Bill Gates believes that A.I. chatbots would help children read as well as improve writing skills. The billionaire philanthropist said that chatbots were developing enough skills to be able to teach children to read and to improve their writing skills in 18 months.
On Tuesday, at the ASU+GSV Summit the Microsoft founder delivered a keynote address. He said that the current chatbots had “incredible fluency at being able to read and write.” He also mentioned that initially it would be stunning to see the skills of these A.I. bots but these bots would develop further and take the place of a teaching assistant.
At the San Diego Summit, Gates also noted that “AIs will come in as a teacher’s aide and give feedback on writing” and this would occur in the next 18 months, according to him. He also mentioned that these AI chatbots would then “amp up what we’re able to do in math.”

Like many others, Bill Gates has wondered why chatbots were better able to tackle reading and writing skills before math and questioned his AI developers on this query, (generally AI development leans on skills in algebra and calculus).
He also provided the answer saying that math calculation was complex and that AI needed improved reasoning abilities to tackle the complexity.
Bill Gates has always been in the forefront of new technology and remains positive about AI, although chatbots have created problems and misunderstood certain data fed to them. He is confident that the technology is bound to improve in the next couple of years.
The philanthropist said that ChatGPT and Bing from Microsoft have free versions that are limited. In February, the Redmond Washington headquartered tech giant rolled out a subscription plan for its chatbot. It is called ChatGPT Plus and currently costs $20 per month.

Although future updates would cost users, the Microsoft co-founder believes that its ChatGPT and perhaps other bots would be a “leveler.” They would also be more affordable as well as more accessible when compared with a human instructor for one-to-one tutoring.
