What at first appeared to be a simple six-string swap between the band and departing guitarist Mick Mars, who initially announced his retirement due to health concerns, developed into an acrimonious and protracted legal dispute. The band then hired John 5 to replace him.
Niki Sixx alleges the announcement that MICK MARS “quit the band” shocked MOTLEY CRÜE.
In an exclusive interview with an extended interview with Rolling Stone, the guitarist said Mötley Crüe were “trying to take away my legacy”, and he never wants to speak to his former bandmates again.
Following Mick Mars’ announcement that he will no longer be travelling with the band in October 2022, the band named John 5 as his replacement. Mars, however, launched a lawsuit against his former bandmates earlier this year, alleging that they “gaslighted” him about his guitar playing and “unilaterally removed” him from the group. The band didn’t anticipate Mars’ departure, according to bassist Nikki Sixx in a recent interview with Guitar World. He also claims that while they didn’t opt to switch guitarists, they are currently content with John 5.
During Mars’ Stadium Tour last year, Sixx claims that he came to the knowledge that something was going to happen. Sixx remarked, “We never saw it coming that Mick wouldn’t be able to tour and would have to leave the band. “We had to question ourselves, ‘Do we want to let the people down?’ in the middle – not even in the middle – of a massive tour. Do we wish to disappoint Live Nation? Do we want to disappoint our tourmates Def Leppard? Do we want to disappoint ourselves because an original band member is no longer able to tour? We had to think very, very carefully about what we were going to do.
Mars accused bassist Nikki Sixx of miming his parts live onstage shortly after the exchange, which the bassist vehemently denied. Mars then filed a lawsuit against the group, alleging that they colluded to get him fired. The complaint, which was submitted on Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, aims to give Mars access to the band’s corporate records, including contracts and tax reports. According to the lawsuit, Mötley Crüe has so far declined to give Mars the materials. Additionally, it demands payment for Mars’ legal costs.
Mötley Crüe has already given Mars the materials he is looking for, according to an attorney for the band. The band’s attorney, Sasha Frid, asserted, “If this lawsuit was really about documents, Mick and his lawyer would not have spilled ink denying a 41-year band history and disparaging the band’s performance on tours.”
