Paris-based luxury goods maker Hermes’ Birkin bags are in demand and have long customer waiting lines. Two Californians recently sued the company for alleged violations of state and federal antitrust and business practice laws. In the same week, two Miami-based thieves stole 60 1.8 million Birkin bags from a store in Miami Beach. One suspect has been arrested, while the other is still at large.
Florida resident Eduardo Travieso Garci, one of the thieves, has been arrested by Miami police, while the other has yet to be apprehended. The 45-year-old is facing charges including grand theft, masked burglary, and unlawful use of a communications device.
Garcia was arrested as his orange Hyundai Santa Fe was traced later in the day. The Hyundai was a suspect vehicle in another jewelry store burglary in Hillsborough County in early March. Police found the car and arrested the owner, Garcia, who confessed to the robbery. He was booked into jail.
According to the police report, officers responded to a burglary call at the Maison Wrist Aficionado store at the Setai Hotel at 2001 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida. The call was made after 3 a.m. on Tuesday. Officers who responded found the front door propped open at the crime scene. The door locked was punched, and the store had been ransacked.
Security footage showed a man popping the lock using an unknown tool. The man emerged from a work van and returned to the van after the lock was opened. In the meantime, another man left the same van and moved towards the store with a large gray garbage bin. The man who popped the lock returned from the van to the business with a second garbage bin.
The report also said both men fled the scene with garbage bins filled with bags and purses. They put the bins into the back of the van. One man drove away in the van, while the other fled the scene in an orange Hyundai Santa Fe.
The Security Manager at Setai Hotel told the police that both suspects had stolen more than 60 Birkin bags manufactured by the Paris-based luxury goods company Hermes. The bags are valued at over $1.8 million.
