On Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry said that Mexican authorities had raided a compound used by a Jewish cult, Lev Tahor, which was located at the border of the country with Guatemala. They rescued a three-year old boy, whose father had escaped from the extremist cult, years ago. Israel Amir and his son were reunited and they landed at the Ben Gurion Airport, in Israel, on Tuesday.

The raid took place at the Tapachula, a city in southeast Mexico, on Friday. There were dozens of local law enforcement authorities, welfare workers, and a private Israeli team which was hired by relatives of the members of the cult, who stood by. Israeli council Lior Batzov was sent to the site to ensure that the cult members did not face violence and children were not separated from parents.

Three men from the Lev Tahor group, who are US citizens were given prison sentences for their role in the abduction of two children(a 14-year old girl and a 12-year old boy) in 2018, last week, by a jury in the U.S. The children had been kidnapped from their mother’s home in New York.

Rabbi Shlomo Helbrans founded the extremist ultra-orthodox sect in the eighties, in Jerusalem. Group members who were scrutinized for their orthodox beliefs including children marrying adults, fled to Canada. When they came under the scrutiny of Canadian authorities, they fled to Guatemala.

According to The Times of Israel, Lev Tahor’s plans and moves can be described as “murky.” Lev Tahor has been referred to as the Jewish Taliban for its extremist views, by the same outlet. It also reported that women and children above the age of three have to wear long black robes that cover their entire body.

A member of the opposition group, Lev Tahor Survivors told The Times of Israel that the group has about 300 to 350 members of whom 15 to 20 could be classified as abusers while the rest might be held against their will.
