Facebook and Instagram’s parent company, Meta, revealed on Sunday that it will start rolling out a premium subscription scheme that would enable users and companies to authenticate their accounts with a blue badge.
The new verification method, termed “Meta Verified,” would cost $11.99 per month for web users or $14.99 per month for iPhone users, according to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg announced the new feature in a Facebook post- “Good morning and new product announcement: this week we’re starting to roll out Meta Verified — a subscription service that lets you verify your account with a government ID, get a blue badge, get extra impersonation protection against accounts claiming to be you, and get direct access to customer support. This new feature is about increasing authenticity and security across our services. Meta Verified starts at $11.99 / month on web or $14.99 / month on iOS. We’ll be rolling out in Australia and New Zealand this week and more countries soon.”
Some Facebook members had comments for Mark Zuckerberg:
Michelle R. Gould wrote, “Direct access to customer support is the real value, much more so than the blue check mark.”
Mark Zuckerberg replied, “I agree that’s a big part of the value. Also, once you’ve verified your account with a government ID we can more effectively find and remove any imposter accounts since we know which account is the real you.” Most of the posts that followed up to the new verification service were from people who advertise on Facebook complaining about the lack of being able to speak to a live person for customer or technical assistance.
After acquiring Twitter last year, Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and owner of Twitter, developed a paid-for authentication system called Twitter Blue. However, Twitter stated on Friday that users who do not subscribe to Twitter Blue will soon be forced to stop utilizing text texts as a form of two-factor authentication to protect their accounts and will instead need to use other verification procedures.
