“Memory” is a 2023 American drama movie featuring Jessica Chastain as Sylvia, a single mother and social worker dealing with her past, and Peter Sarsgaard as Saul, a man experiencing early onset dementia. The film follows their intertwined lives after a high school reunion. Michel Franco wrote and directed the picture.
The film starts by filming members during an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
Chastain portrays Sylvia, a single mother employed at an adult daycare facility. Upon meeting her at an AA meeting where she is commended for her long period of sobriety, it becomes evident that she has had significant challenges.
Sylvia is seated by herself at a table at her high school reunion. Saul is in the background of a crowd, listening to a lively speech framed by streamers. He takes a seat near her and smiles. Sylvia leaves abruptly without exchanging any words.
Sylvia gets approached by a man named Saul, who Sarsgaard portrays. His quiet devotion makes Sylvia uneasy, especially when he accompanies her home and stays outside her apartment overnight. The following day, Sylvia discovers additional information about Saul that could provide insight into his troubling actions. He has early-onset dementia and experiences frequent short-term memory loss.
