Peloton (PTON) released a mandatory software update. The security risk has not affected lower-priced Peloton Bikes due to different type of touchscreen used on its bike.
McAfee has recommended that bike owners activate automatic software updates to fix the issue.
This is not the first time that Peloton has had security issues. Back in May there was a security breach that revealed personal account information such as user city, weight, and age. Peloton recalled its treadmill after a child died and others were injured while the machine was operating on the same day the breach of personal security information was leaked.
McAfee said hackers could potentially spy on Peloton bikes by tricking them into installing “malicious apps disguised as Netflix and Spotify,” according to the software security companies report on Wednesday
McAfee also stated, “Hackers could install these USBs anywhere in the supply chain, from construction to delivery, which would put consumers who own the pricey bikes at risk as well.
Peloton has released this statement on its security page:
At Peloton, we consider the security of our systems and the best interest of our members a top priority. However, no matter how much effort we put into system security, there can still be vulnerabilities present. Because of this we are looking to the security community to help us meet this top priority through programs like responsible disclosure.
