It was in August 2022 when the devastating wildfires wreaked havoc across the picturesque landscapes of Maui, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming multiple lives. The unrelenting inferno, fueled by dry conditions and fierce winds, had challenged firefighting efforts, and led to tragic losses within the affected communities.
Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen declared on Monday afternoon that more of West Maui, including hotels and businesses from Kahana to the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa in Kaanapali, will reopen to tourists on November 1.
Bissen said at a news conference at the Lahaina Civic Center, “There has been an expression from families and workers that there is a sense of readiness,” “This isn’t for everyone.” “Those that are not ready to go back to work should contact their employers and continue to seek the help and attention that they need.”
Bissen also clarified unresolved concerns about how the return of tourists will affect displaced locals who are now lodging in over thirty-six hotels and other properties. The decision followed many discussions with the Mayor in Lahaina. Advisory Team, the American Red Cross, and other partners, as well as listening carefully to community feedback describing the overall transition as smooth during the first phase of re-opening.
“The Red Cross has assured me that housing for displaced Lahaina residents, including those staying in hotels, is not in jeopardy,” Mayor Bissen said. “In addition, the county has a commitment from other partners to work on developing childcare programs for displaced families. Sheltering close to 7,000 survivors remains a critical focus of our efforts, and their needs are our priority. I appreciate the help our hotels have provided these past several weeks, and we’ll continue to work together with the hotel properties and the American Red Cross.”
The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority advises travelers to check with individual accommodations, activities, and businesses in West Maui for their availability and hours of operation. As travelers return to Maui after the devastating August wildfires, they will help to sustain jobs, keep businesses open, and support the community.
Lahaina, where the wildfires destroyed the entire town, remains closed to visitors until further notice out of respect for the town’s residents.
