On Thursday, a Massachusetts husband and father of three pleaded guilty to accidentally hiring an undercover FBI agent to murder his wife. The couple was going through a contentious divorce. 56-year-old Massimo Marenghi now faces almost ten years in prison for the unsuccessful murder-for-hire case against his wife.
On January 1, 2021, a mystery person claimed Marenghi asked them for assistance in killing his wife after complaining she was seeking a restraining order against him. This information placed Marenghi on law enforcement’s radar.

In Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Maranghi met an undercover FBI agent acting as a contract killer and “described a ‘situation’ he needed to take ‘care of’ his ‘soon-to-be’ ex-wife,” according to charging papers made public by the prosecution. According to the prosecution, the agent “discussed a price of $10,000” to get rid of her.
According to the lawyer’s office, Marenghi “provided the undercover agent with a photograph of his wife’s residence,” explained how he could evade being detected by “cameras while approaching the residence.”
Marenghi gave a cash deposit of $1,500 to Smith for the murder. In addition, he also shared a picture of his wife, the color, model, and license plate number of her vehicle, the business hours of her location, and a schedule outlining the times he would have custody of his children, which he claimed would be the “best time for the construction work to start,” the report stated.
He texted the federal agent about the work and discussed it using construction terminology. The details about Marenghi’s wife were described as a “blueprint” by Law and Crime. Marenghi also showed the agent how to get past the surveillance equipment outside his wife’s home. On June 8, Marenghi will be convicted.
