Donta Scott scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half to help Maryland to a 70-54 win over Minnesota in the second round of the Big Ten tournament on Thursday in Chicago.

After missing his first seven shots, Jahmir Young scored 14 of his 15 points in the second half as sixth-seeded Maryland (21-11) advanced to a quarterfinal matchup with third-seeded Indiana (21-10) on Friday night.

Donald Carey added 11 points and Julian Reese contributed 10 points and eight rebounds as Maryland handled Minnesota for the third time this year and 10th straight time in the series.

Pharrel Payne had 17 points and nine rebounds to pace 14th-seeded Minnesota (9-22). Braeden Carrington added 12 points.

Maryland limited the Golden Gophers’ top two scorers, Dawson Garcia and Jamison Battle, to six and two points, respectively. The duo made 3 of 15 shots from the floor.

The Golden Gophers shot 43.5 percent and made 5 of 13 from deep (38.5 percent). Minnesota committed 15 turnovers against the Terps’ full-court pressure.

Maryland shot 42.6 percent and hit 8 of 21 shots from beyond the arc (38.1 percent). The Terps won the battle of the boards 31-24. Scott added eight rebounds and Young had six.

In the first half, neither team led by more than six points until Scott made a pair of 3-pointers sandwiched around another trey by Carey as Maryland took a 26-17 lead.

In the first three minutes of the second half, after leading at the break 31-24, Carey drained two 3-pointers to give the Terps a 41-26 advantage.

It was still a 15-point lead with seven minutes left before Carrington hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the Terps’ lead to 56-47.

But Young responded immediately, driving for a three-point play and adding a putback to keep Maryland in charge. Young shook off his cold start to score all but one of his points in the final 12 minutes.
