Marvel announced the arrival of two transgender superheroes in a new Pride comic. Transgender writer Charlier Jane Anders has created the two characters: Escapade, who is also called Shela Sexton and Morgan Red, who is her partner. Both of them fight crime on the mutant nation of Krakoa. British team Ro Stein and Ted Brandt have created the artwork. The superhero and her partner have been there for each other through childhood to adulthood.
A press release from Marvel said that the pair are professional thieves who steal from organizations that are corrupt and criminal till a life changing event occurs in Escapade’s life. They are also helped by Hibbert, a genetically modified turtle. They had saved the turtle from a lab.
Escapade has a super power that gives her ability to take the form of an individual standing near her, by switching locations and bodies. The writer said that Escapade could become the Mayor of New York, for a while, if she got close to him or her.
Morgan Red doesn’t seem to have a super power but is extremely “tech savvy.” He also has lots of equipment in a tool belt. The belt is filled with devices and tools that have been stolen.
The comic has a whole community of trans mutants. Charlie Jane Anders is a transgender. She said that she wanted to be “super clear that being a mutant is not a metaphor for being trans and vice versa.”
Anders also says that her superhero has faced rejection as she is transgender and wants to help people so they “belong.” She also want them to “be seen and loved.” This has been the writer’s aim, who hopes that all especially young trans people who read the topic are able to grasp this message.
The first edition of “Marvel’s Voices: Pride” will be released on June 22, 2022. It will feature Escape and Red. There will be eight “queer-centered” stories in the Marvel Universe, by writers and artists from different walks of life.
