70-year-old Robert Sundin, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was shot dead on Thursday morning while assisting a restaurant worker during an armed robbery in Vallejo, California. An armed robber killed the uninterested Navy veteran after he rushed to protect a waitress at the California restaurant he frequented.
Sundin was in his car outside Scotty’s restaurant on Tennessee Street in Vallejo, California, on December 8, according to Teresa Brasher, when he noticed a thief approaching Teresa Brasher, a longtime waitress at the restaurant.
According to Brasher, a man in a ski mask and hoodie riding an electric scooter approached her car door and pointed at her, then at her bag.
She is unsure whether it was a “finger or a gun” that the shooter pointed at her.
“He’s always going to be my guardian angel for life.†@USMC veteran Robert Sundin died a hero, says Teresa Brasher, longtime server at Scotty’s Restaurant. Sundin, a married father who worked at VA Healthcare and was a devout member of his church, jumped out of his car and rushed to his friend’s aid.
Brasher stated that he grabbed him. That’s when she heard the shot. Every weekday at 5:30 a.m., the veteran would arrive at Scotty’s Restaurant on Tennessee and Tuolumne streets.
Brasher claims that “God had not planned for me. But there was a spot up there for Bob.”
Sundin lived in Napa, not far from the restaurant, and his daily routine consisted of sitting in the same seat every morning, reading the newspaper, and chatting with a few of the staff while waiting for his regular breakfast order.
Nay Ung, Scotty’s owner, was also devastated. He said that Sundin as “just a wonderful man.” He was also a dedicated volunteer for the Fairchield church, First Assembly of God, and was described as “the first person to arrive and the last person to leave” by Pastor Eric Lura. Following Sundin’s untimely death, the restaurant created a GoFundMe page and asked the community to “come together to support Robert’s family.”
