The manhunt for the suspect in the killing of a Maryland judge on Thursday continued into Sunday. Maryland Sheriff’s office said that a suspect allegedly ‘targeted’ the judge after he lost a child custody battle. The judge had given the suspect’s estranged wife custody of their four minor children. A $10,000 dollar reward has been offered and the suspect’s car has been found abandoned near the West Virginia border, on Saturday.
On Friday, the U.S. Marshals Service asked the public to help them find a suspect called Pedro Argote. The 49-year-old man of Hagerstown county had allegedly gunned down Washington County Circuit Court Judge Andrew Wilkinson, on Thursday in his driveway at Waterford Road, in Hagerstown. The judge was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead due to gunshot wounds. The shooting took incident took place around 8 p.m., and the judge’s wife and son were home at the time of the incident.
Earlier. authorities had mentioned that the suspect might be driving a full-size SUV, a 2009 model Mercedes-Benz GL 450.
The U.S. Marshals Service also said that they were offering a reward of up to $10,000 to the public for information that could lead to the arrest of Argote. They described him as armed and dangerous. They said he had multiple ties beyond the state and included ties with New York, Florida and North Carolina.
On Saturday, Washington County Sheriff Brian K Albert addressed a news conference and said that an SUV that belonged to Argote had been found by a resident of Williamsport, Maryland, in a woody location in Maryland, close to the West Virginia border at about 11 a.m., in the morning.
Albert also said that they didn’t think that the “community” was at risk but asked people to “avoid the search area.”
Earlier on Friday, Albert had said that the shooting took place after the custody decision by the judge. He said that the judge had taken the decision in Argote’s wife’s favor for a finding including “cruelty of treatment” and “irreconcilable differences.”
On Thursday, Judge Wilkinson granted Argote’s wife an absolute divorce. She was also given sole legal custody of their minor children whose ages are 12, 11, 5, and 3, at the hearing on Thursday, which was not attended by Argote. He was the judge in the couple’s divorce that was filed in June 2022. He was allegedly gunned down by Argote for a judgement favoring Argote’s wife
