On Friday, a federal grand jury indicted Jamie Tran who was accused of close-range shooting two Jewish men in Los Angeles. For the hate crime and weapons charges, the 28-year-old was charged with two hate crime counts for intentionally injuring and trying to kill his victims., Martin Estrada, the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California said in a statement. The incidents took place on February 15 and 16.

The two men were allegedly shot by Tran in two distinct incidents in L.A.’s Pico-Robertson neighborhood, which has a significant Jewish population. The shooter was apprehended days after the shootings, and both unidentified victims lived. According to the indictment, Tran had a past of making antisemitic remarks.

According to the indictment, the alleged shooter reportedly drove to the Pico-Robertson neighborhood in Los Angeles on both mornings, recognized the victims by their yarmulkes, and shot them at close range. The victim of the shooting on February 15 was struck in the back after leaving synagogue services. The accused shooter was detained on February 17.

The indictment claimed that the suspect quit dental school in 2018 after making anti-Semitic remarks about other pupils who he believed to be Jewish. Prosecutors claim that between August 2022 and December 2022, the accused shooter sent and shared several antisemitic messages and threats. One of these threats included calls and texts to an old classmate.

The suspect reportedly sent a flyer containing antisemitic propaganda to two dozen old classmates via email in November 2022. Before the attacks, the suspect reportedly purchased “at least two firearms” and searched the internet for ‘kosher markets’ to discover areas where Jewish people congregate. On March 9, the suspect is due to be officially charged. If found guilty of all the charges, the maximum punishment he could receive in federal prison is life, according to the prosecution.

According to The Algemeiner’s analysis of crime statistics, there were 41 percent more assaults against Jews in the Big Apple in 2022. The report states that there were 293 antisemitic incidents altogether in 2022, up from 207 overall in 2021. According to NYPD statistics, there were 125% more antisemitic hate crimes committed in November of 2022 alone than there were in November 2021: 45 versus 20.
