On Friday, a teenager was killed at the Mall of America. A shooting took place between two groups at the nation’s largest shopping center, sending customers running to find cover after they heard shots ringing. Stores shuttered down and people had to remain inside for a couple of hours. The Mall of America bans guns on its premises but has not required its customers to pass through metal detectors. One bystander’s jacket was reported to have been grazed by a bullet, during the shooting.
Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges told reporters that the 19-year old victim was shot when two groups got into an altercation on the first floor of Nordstrom. The security video at the mall recorded the incident that took place between groups that had between five to nine people.
The police chief said that they didn’t know the reason for the fight nor have they arrested anyone till late Friday. He mentioned that a group that consisted of five to seven people had run away from the scene of the shooting through a door.
Chief Hodges expressed his grief for the family who had to bury their family member, a few days before Christmas. He asked anyone who was involved in the shooting to turn themselves in. He also warned people against helping the people who were involved in the shooting.
The shooting at Mall of America took place just a day before Christmas Eve, when thousands were at the popular location for Christmas shopping. The mall was placed on lockdown immediately and was reopened at 10:10 p.m.
The Mall of America was opened in Bloomington in 1992. Earlier this year, a man had fired three shots in front of a store that was located in the mall. Following this, the mall had experimented with metal detectors at a few of its entrances. It told KARE an NBC affiliate that it was testing options, at that time.
The recent shooting incident at the Mall of America, when several thousands of shoppers were at the location should result in stronger and stricter security measures as mall and store shopping are regaining popularity after the pandemic era lockdowns.
