Malik Reneau scored a game-high 20 points as Miami defeated Jacksonville 86-69 on Monday at Coral Gables, Fla., in the season opener for both teams.

Hurricanes freshman Shelton Henderson — a five-star recruit — scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half. Miami’s Ernest Udeh Jr. scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

Tru Washington (12 points) and Tre Donaldson (11 points) also put up double-figure point totals for the Hurricanes.

Miami’s Jai Lucas made his debut as a head coach. All of his players made their Hurricanes debut as Lucas completely revamped the roster.

The Dolphins were led in scoring by Jaylen Jones (14 points), Chris Arias (12 points) and Hayden Wood (10).

Early on, the game was tight. Jacksonville, after falling behind 6-0, made a 3-pointer on four straight possessions, taking a 12-8 lead.

However, Miami followed immediately with a 10-0 run and led for the rest of the half, taking a 41-36 edge into the break.

Henderson led all first-half scorers with 10 points.

Miami attacked the rim in the first half, making 54.2% of its shots. However, the Hurricanes showed a vulnerability on the perimeter, making just 1 of 8 long-range attempts.

Jacksonville made 43.3% of its shots before halftime, including 4 of 15 from 3-point range (26.7%). The Dolphins missed their final nine attempts from 3-point range in the opening half.

Miami was never seriously challenged in the second half, leading by as many as 21 points.

For the game, Miami shot 55.1% overall but just 3-for-14 (21.4%) on 3-point tries.

Jacksonville, meanwhile, shot 46.6% from the floor and 8-of-28 (28.6%) from long distance.

Miami outrebounded the Dolphins 35-20. The Hurricanes also had a 44-30 edge on points in the paint.

The other big advantage for the Hurricanes came at the foul line, where they shot 29-for-37 (78.4%). Jacksonville made just half of its 14 free throws.
