The President of France—Emmanuel Macron, has canceled a trip to Germany as the country continues to burn as the rioters continue to create unrest. Three days of rioting took place after a French policeman shot dead a 17-year-old as he ran through a traffic signal. About 1300 people have been arrested across the country, so far. The policeman, who shot the teenager, has been arrested.
Macron has implored parents to keep their children home as many of the rioters have been very young and are reportedly even 13-years old. He condemned the violence and called the rioting an “unacceptable exploitation of the adolescent’s death.”
Footage of the shooting incident was captured by a passerby. It showed two officers standing beside the driver’s side of a car. One of the officers shot the driver, although there appeared to be no threat.

Nanterre prosecutor Pascal Prache said that the officer said that the gun had been fired as he believed that the boy would run over someone as he drove his car.
Prache said that the use of the weapon by the officer was illegal and that he was under investigation for voluntary manslaughter. He added that the officer had been detained.
Large scale events in France including celebratory ones have been banned. Macron has also asked social media companies to remove content that could be sensitive. A spokesperson for Snapchat said that the social media company did not tolerate any kind of violence.
Overseas French territories also saw violence including a death by a stray bullet in French Guinea. Riots also took place in Réunion island in the Indian Ocean, which is a French territory.
Activists say that race was a factor in Nahel’s killing as he was a muslim of Algerian and Moroccan descent. People of color in France including young men who are thought to be black or Arab were 20 times more likely to be stopped by police in France when compared with their peers according to a 2017 study by Rights Defenders, which is an independent watchdog for human rights in France.
The current unrest has also led to a ban on demonstrations in certain cities. There have also been travel warnings from overseas including the U.S. and the U.K. The transport system in France remains functional while curfew has been placed at certain locations and at certain times.
