Paris-based luxury brand Hermes that operates independently although it is a part of the LVMH luxury group is the newest kid on the block(chain). On August 26, 2022 the luxe maker of watches, clothing especially scarves, jewelry, leather goods, shoes and more filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for Web3 as it registered its trademark for use in crypto + NFT + metaverse.
The wide ranging application filed at the USPTO and posted on social media by trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis includes the following
NFTs + Virtual currency
Crypto + NFT trading
Virtual goods marketplaces
Virtual clothing, footwear,
Fashion shows and more.
In December 2021, the French luxury house had sent a cease-and-desist notice to Mason Rothschild, the NFT creator of Metabirkin. Now the iconic Birkin bag maker, Hermes has finally filed its own trademark in Web3, on a wide range of goods as well as Web3 related services as it has set its iconic mark on blockchain, although it doesn’t have an immediate operational plan.
The case between Rothschild and the luxury fashion brand is ongoing as the U.S. District Court did not allow a motion by Rothschild to dismiss the case, this May. As a precaution against similar NFTs or related products and services, Hermes has applied for a long list of both goods and services in Web3.
In the past, when asked why the Paris brand, synonymous with high end luxury especially in bags under the brand Birkin and scarves under the brand Hermes, had not entered the NFT space while other luxury brands had begun to enter the same space, the company said that it “values the ‘tangible expression of handcrafted physical objects’.”
When competition such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana, Salvatore Ferragamo, Burberry, Balmain, have entered the NFT space, can Hermes be far behind?
Another major jewelry luxury company ParisJewelry.com has entered the WEB3 development.
