LPGA News: Hannah Green holes clutch putt to win in Singapore

Australian Hannah Green drained a 27-foot putt on the final hole to win the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore on Sunday, besting Celine Boutier of France by one stroke.

Green entered the final round two shots behind third-round leader Ayaka Furue of Japan, who faltered Sunday with a 75. That left the door open for Green and Boutier, tied for third to start the day, to battle it out on the steamy Tanjong Course at Sentosa Golf Club.

Green and Boutier had rounds of 67 on Sunday, with Green finishing at 13-under 275 for the tournament and Boutier at 276.

Green had two birdies on the front nine and played Nos. 10 to 15 at even par. But with birdies on the final three holes, she clinched a fourth career LPGA win and the $270,000 first prize.

“I didn’t hole many putts from long range today until obviously the last couple holes,” Green said. “But I made a really good birdie on 16 and was able to 2-putt there. Kind of gave the first putt a little too much and then made a 5-footer for birdie. That was nice. I could then see the leaderboard on 17, and made a putt there. I knew I needed to at least birdie the last to win by one. So as soon as that putt went in, I was like, oh, my God, I’ve won.”

Boutier, one group ahead of Green in the final round, was on the practice green awaiting a potential playoff when the Australian sank the championship-clinching birdie.

She said she was happy to have made a solid run on Sunday with a bogey-free effort.

“Feeling very good about my round today,” she said. “I think I played a lot better than yesterday, which was really positive. I feel like I made some putts and I gave myself a lot of chances. So I’m very satisfied with my round.”

Four players finished tied for third at 9-under 279: Nasa Hataoka (69 on Sunday) and Yuna Nishimura (66) of Japan, Mi Hyang Lee (67) of South Korea and Canada’s Brooke Henderson (68).

Nishimura tied for the low round of the day, and Henderson birdied three of her final four holes to move into the group.

Defending champion Jin Young Ko of South Korea (71) finished in a five-way tie for eighth at 7-under 281.
