Green Bay coach Kevin Borseth announced his retirement on Wednesday after winning 821 games during 37 seasons as a head coach.

Borseth, who turns 70 in June, ranks 19th all-time in women’s college basketball wins and 16th in Division I victories (596), according to the school.

His overall record was 821-316, including 596-218 in Division I games. He coached at Division II Michigan Tech (1987-98), Michigan (2007-12) and had two stints at Green Bay (1998-2007, 2012-24).

Borseth coached in 14 NCAA Tournaments — 13 with the Phoenix and one at Michigan. His final Green Bay squad went 27-7 and lost to Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA tourney.

“I spent 42 years of my life doing this and it’s not easy. It’s something I really loved to do. It’s been a thrill,” said Borseth, who picked up 509 of his wins at Green Bay. “To wake up tomorrow morning and not be the head coach … it’s going to hurt. It’s been a long journey, and there are many people to thank.

“I’ve grown a lot as a coach over the course of these years, mostly in part because of the players. The players teach you a lot more than you’ll ever think. I’ve learned far more from the players than I’ve ever taught them.”

Green Bay chancellor Michael Alexander said one of the streets next to the Kress Events Center — where the Phoenix play their home games — will be renamed Kevin Borseth Way.
