Movie Review: Lonely Planet
In Lonely Planet, director Susannah Grant delivers a sweeping romantic drama set against the stunning backdrop of Morocco. Laura Dern stars as a reclusive novelist seeking solace and inspiration at a prestigious writer’s retreat. Burdened by writer’s block, her character finds the remote landscape to be both isolating and transformative. Dern’s portrayal of a woman in quiet turmoil is nuanced and deeply relatable, compelling her journey into emotional rediscovery.
Enter Liam Hemsworth, a younger man whose presence shifts the dynamic. Their initial acquaintanceship quickly morphs into something deeper — an intoxicating, life-altering love affair. Hemsworth, with a blend of charm and mystery, complements Dern’s more introspective performance, creating a magnetic on-screen chemistry.
The Moroccan setting is as much a character as the leads, with its vast deserts and vibrant markets providing beauty and isolation. Grant’s direction subtly weaves themes of solitude, personal growth, and the unpredictability of love. The script avoids predictable romance tropes, opting instead for a slow burn that rewards patient viewers.
Produced by Liza Chasin, Lonely Planet will premiere on Netflix on October 11. The film promises to explore love’s transformative power while highlighting the complexity of relationships that transcend age and circumstance.
