At the age of eighty-nine, Oscar-winning actor Alan Arkin has died. His diverse career spanned seven decades.
Arkin was married three times and had three sons, Adam, Matthew, and Anthony, all of whom are actors. He was also an uncle of author Avi and a cousin of neuroscientist Joseph Wortis. He died of natural causes at his home in Carlsbad, California.
Melody Korenbrot, Arkin’s agent, confirmed his passing to USA TODAY on Friday and cited a statement his sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony gave jointly to People on behalf of the family. “Both as an artist and a person, our father was a force of nature with a singularly gifted. He was adored and will be sadly lost for being a devoted husband, father, grandpa, and great-grandfather.
USA Today reported for his part as Norman, the Hollywood agent of Michael Douglas’ acting coach character Sandy in the first two seasons of Netflix’s award-winning series “The Kominsky Method,” Arkin was most known to younger audiences.
Arkin began his entertainment career as an organizer and singer with The Tarriers, a group that briefly rode the folk musical revival wave of the late 1950s. Later, he turned to stage acting, off-Broadway and always in dramatic roles1 He made his Broadway debut in 1963 with Enter Laughing, a comedy based on Carl Reiner’s novel, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He also starred in the comedic play Luv (1964) and directed The Sunshine Boys (1972), earning a Tony nomination for Best Direction of a Play2
He gained stardom with his roles in the films The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966), Wait Until Dark (1967), The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1968), Popi (1969), Catch-22 (1970), and The In-Laws (1979). He received Oscar nominations for Best Actor for his performances in The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. He also won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming2
He later took on supporting roles in Edward Scissorhands (1990), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), Grosse Point Blank (1997), Thirteen Conversations About One Thing (2001), Sunshine Cleaning (2007), Get Smart (2008), and Argo (2012). For his performance as a foul-mouthed grandfather in Little Miss Sunshine (2006), he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also received a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Argo2.
