Le Moyne College is reclassifying from NCAA Division II to Division I and will join the Northeast Conference this fall.
The private school from Syracuse, N.Y., has 21 NCAA teams — 10 men’s and 11 women’s. The Dolphins will become the 10th member of the NEC.
Le Moyne currently is a member of the Northeast-10 Conference. Because of a four-year reclassification process, Le Moyne won’t be able to compete for Division I NCAA titles until the 2027-28 academic year, but can take part in NEC postseason play starting in 2025-26.
“Reclassifying our intercollegiate athletics program to Division I and accepting membership in the Northeast Conference is a transformational moment in the history of Le Moyne College,” athletic director Bob Beretta said in a news release. “We are thrilled that our student-athletes will receive the opportunity to compete at the highest level of collegiate athletics and have a chance to showcase their talents on the greatest stage.”
Le Moyne has won 44 conference championships in nine sports and eight national championships: six in men’s lacrosse, one in women’s lacrosse and an individual championship in swimming and diving.
Le Moyne teams have qualified for 135 NCAA Tournament bids.
The Dolphins made national news in November 2009 when they stunned Syracuse 82-79 in an exhibition game.
