Movie Review: “Last Summer” –

A provocative return for Catherine Breillat “Last Summer,” her first film in a decade, the fearless 75-year-old French auteur Catherine Breillat (known for “Fat Girl” and “The Last Mistress”) proves she’s as provocative as ever. This Cannes-stirring film navigates the dark road of uncontrollable passion with a gripping narrative and compelling performances.

Léa Drucker delivers a remarkably nuanced and radiant performance as Anne, an attorney whose marriage to Pierre (Olivier Rabourdin), a distracted businessman, has reached a plateau.

The arrival of Pierre’s troubled seventeen-year-old son, Théo (Samuel Kircher), from a previous marriage, adds to the household’s tension. When Pierre leaves for a business trip, Anne and Théo, confined under the same roof for the first time, are entangled in an unexpected and dangerously lustful affair. This liaison threatens the fragile stability of their lives.

Breillat’s direction masterfully explores power dynamics, female desire, and fulfillment, pushing boundaries with boldness and sensitivity.

The film’s erotic tension is heightened by Kim Gordon’s evocative music, which underscores the intense and forbidden attraction between Anne and Théo.

“Last Summer” is a testament to Breillat’s steadfast vision and ability to provoke and challenge her audience.

This film is a bold survey of desire and control, significantly adding to Breillat’s provocative oeuvre.

The cast includes Léa Drucker as Anne, Olivier Rabourdin as Pierre, Samuel Kircher as Théo, Clotilde Courau as Mina, Serena Hu as Serena, and Angela Chen as Angela. It features Romain Maricau, Romane Violeau, Marie Lucas, Nelia Da Costa, and Lilas-Rose Gilberti-Poisot.
