On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) presented new statistics at a Police Commission meeting and the figures are alarming. With less than two weeks remaining in the year, there are strong indications that the City of Angels will increase its tally of hate crimes this year. In 2021, LA reported 615 hate crimes. LAPD Chief Michel Moore singled out social media platforms and celebrity rapper Kanye West for playing a leading role in perpetuating such crimes due to extremist views.

The LAPD reported the following statistics:

In 2021, the number of crimes against LGBTQ people was 19 and it has increased to 30, in 2022.
The number of crimes committed against Jewish people was 88 this year, when compared with 72 last year. The group that was the targeted the most remained the same–Black Angelenos. The number of hate crimes against them increased to 279, in 2022. This was a 36 percent jump from 2021.One group in the city saw a fall in hate crimes. Crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders saw a 20 percent fall in 2022, when compared with 2021. Fans are devastated.

LAPD Chief Moore said, “These are troubling numbers for L.A.” California Attorney General Robert Bonta referred to the numbers last year as “an epidemic of hate.”

Later in the meeting, on the same day, Chief Moore said that the rise in hate crime was partly due to the growth of racism and bigoted speech online, which often went unchecked. He said that law enforcement professionals and educators had told him that “the expansion of social media and the lack of checks and balances” had given a “tremendous platform” to those might not have had a voice.

During Tuesday’s meeting LAPD Chief Michel Moore said, “We see Kanye West and others that have gone to Twitter and other social media platforms and we’ve seen other platforms such as Parler that have been created solely for people with extremist views to have a platform. And that I think is dangerous.”
