Labaron Philon Jr., No. 8 Alabama overwhelm Maryland

Labaron Philon Jr. compiled 20 points, six assists and four rebounds to lead a balanced attack in No. 8 Alabama’s 105-72 victory over Maryland on Wednesday in a Players Era men’s tournament consolation game at Las Vegas.

The Crimson Tide (5-2) had seven players score in double figures.

Alabama’s Aden Holloway, a junior guard, achieved his first career double-double, finishing with 17 points and a career-high 10 assists.

Davion Hannah added 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Taylor Bol Bowen also had 12 points, Aiden Sherrell and London Jemison each finished with 11, and Amari Allen had 10. Sherrell grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Alabama shot 57.6% from the field, including 14 of 31 (45.2%) from 3-point range. Holloway was 5 of 7 from beyond the arc.

The Crimson Tide finished with 29 assists on their 38 made field goals.

A 49-30 rebounding edge translated into the Crimson Tide having 14 second-chance points and 48 points in the paint.

Maryland (5-3) was led by Darius Adams’ 20 points. Pharrel Payne added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists, and Guillermo Del Pino put up 10 points.

Alabama scored the game’s first seven points and never trailed.

The Crimson Tide outscored Maryland 11-3 to increase the lead to 24-7 with 13:05 left in the first half.

By that time, Alabama made five 3-pointers, two by Houston Mallette.

Philon scored the first five points of an 8-0 stretch that put Alabama ahead 39-17 with 6:28 left until halftime.

Alabama led 49-29 at halftime behind 11 points each from Philon and Holloway.

The Crimson Tide were 16 of 32 from the field at halftime, having hit 9 of 20 from 3-point range. Holloway was 3 of 5 and Mallette 2 of 3 from beyond the arc.

After Payne scored four straight points to cut the Terrapins’ deficit to 53-37, Alabama responded with five unanswered points, including a 3-pointer by Philon.

A stretch in which Alabama outscored Maryland 9-3, including another 3-pointer by Holloway, increased the Crimson Tide’s lead to 79-54 with 8:31 remaining.
