Kraft Heinz announced its newest mac and cheese option with a difference, on Wednesday. The new version is a vegan one and does not contain cheese made from dairy. Instead it uses a plant-based sauce. The Wednesday announcement also said that there would be two flavors. The new version of the the popular creamy 85-year comfort food by the food and beverage giant is available on some shelves in the U.S. by the end of the month and will be rolled out across the nation in the next few months.
The dairy-free macaroni and cheese is called Kraft NotMac&Cheese. The comfort food uses ingredients such as fava bean protein and coconut oil powder. It has been developed in collaboration with a Chicago based startup called Not Co., which makes plant-based milk as well as burgers and other products.
Kraft Heinz and Not Co. joined together in 2022 to form a venture called The Kraft Heinz Not Co. Although they are debuting Kraft NotMac&Cheese in the U.S. this month, they have already released other vegan products such as non-dairy cheese slices as well as mayonnaise in the U.S called NotCheese Slices and NotMayo. The joint venture is planning to increase the number of products it offers and will also begin international distribution in 2024.
NotMac&Cheese will be available in two flavors—white cheddar and original flavor. It will cost $3.49 per box.
NotMac&Cheese is not necessarily healthier that the original mac and cheese from Kraft. Both the original and the vegan version have their pluses and minuses. When prepared totally using margarine and almond milk, 1 cup of NotMac&Cheese contains 450 calories. One cup of original Mac & Cheese using margarine and 2 percent milk contains 350 calories. The plant-based NotMac&Cheese dry mix has a higher fat and carbohydrate content but is lower in cholesterol and has more protein and fiber when compared with the original version of Mac & Cheese with dairy cheese.
