Kohl’s (KSS) and Macy’s (M) recently announced that they would be shuttering stores in more than 15 states across the US. Both the large American retailers made the announcement less than a week ago. Some web fans are disappointed as they prefer to shop in brick-and-mortar stores. Retail fans might also see store closures from Macy’s and Kohl’s in the same city and community.
Kohl’s said it closed “underperforming” stores in specific locations. It operates more than 1000 stores across the U.S. and will close 27 stores by April 2025. Employees will be offered severance packages or the option to relocate to other stores.
Kohl’s also said its E-commerce Fulfillment Center in San Bernardino will be shuttered this May. The department store said that locations can fulfill more orders using new technology. So, the facility will close after the expiry of its lease. It began operations in 2010.
Kohl’s has seen shrinking retail sales; its stock has fallen 50 percent in the last 12 months. Some brick-and-mortar stores are underperforming due to multiple reasons and are getting shuttered.
Macy’s said that the closure of its stores was part of its initiative “to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth.” The American retailer calls its revitalization plan a “Bold New Chapter.” The retail chain focused resources and investments in locations where retail fans gave them positive outcomes.
Macy’s has also seen a decline in overall sales. It reported $4.7 billion in the quarter ending Nov. 2, 2024. The giant retailer reported a 2.4 percent decline in sales in the third quarter.
Three large states, California, New York, and Florida, will see the most significant closures from both Kohl’s and Macy’s as multiple locations in major cities in the states will be shuttered by April 2025.
