King Charles III made his first overseas visit after his cancer diagnosis to Normandy, France, to honor the fallen soldiers and veterans on the 80th anniversary of D-Day. They were responsible for the victory of the Allies over Hitler, leading to the end of World War II when they launched an amphibious invasion on the beaches of Normandy. King Charles was accompanied by his wife, Queen Camilla, and son, Prince William, who was the heir to the monarchy in Great Britain. Web fans appreciated the royal family’s visit to honor veterans.
King Charles wore his Field Marshal No. 4 Tropical Service dress uniform with its accompanying decorations, including medals. He reflected in length on the services of the armed forces involved and said that they had “carried out their duty with a humbling sense of resolve and determination” and more. He also spoke a few words in French to thank the people of France.
Many U.S., U.K., and Canadian military lost their lives on these beaches but helped win the war. About 10,000 Allied troops were killed or injured on D-Day. There are cemeteries and memorials for them, and world leaders, veterans, and families of these troops visit Normandy in large numbers on D-Day.
On Thursday morning, King Charles and Queen Camilla attended the commemorative event at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer, near Gold Beach. French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, were also present at the event conducted by the UK Ministry of Defense and the Royal British Legion.
Later on Thursday, Prince William joined several world leaders and heads of state at Omaha Beach in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, Normandy. He represented his father, the King. President Joe Biden of the U.S. and President Justin Trudeau of Canada were also present.
On June 6, there were a series of events, including a military piper playing a lament, a series of reenactments, flyovers by military aircraft, memorial services in several locations, and the awarding of the Legion of Honor, the highest award in France, by Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, to veterans and also to those who worked behind the scenes to plan the invasion in Normandy.
