On October 28, King Charles III appointed himself as Captain General of the Royal Marines. His son, Prince Harry was the previous Captain General but lost the role after he stepped down from royal duties, in 2020. The new appointment was made one day after the prince revealed that his memoir will be published, on January 10, 2023. Titled ‘Spare’ it is expected to be raw, provocative and more.

King Charles is a royal navy veteran. He served alongside the Royal Marines on military ship HMS Hermes. The 845 Naval Squadron had completed naval exercises in the West Atlantic as well as the West Indies. The monarch also has other honorary military titles such including Admiral of the Fleet in the Royal Navy.

The royal family posted the news on Twitter, today. King Charles also released a statement where he said that he was “honored to become part of the Corps Family.” He mentioned that he was looking forward to meeting them and sent his “heartfelt and special wishes for a very happy 358th birthday.” He added the motto of the Royal Marines: “Per Mare, Per Terram” which is Latin for “By Sea, By Land.”

Reports say that Prince Harry was saddened to lose his ceremonial title. He was bestowed this title by Queen Elizabeth II in 2017, after the death of his grandfather Prince Philip, who held the title before him. Prince Harry, who is the Duke of Sussex, lost all his military titles, when he stepped away from his royal duties after he and his wife Meghan Markle decided to move to Montecito, California with son Archie. Their daughter Lilibet was born in California, U.S.A.

He lost the following titles:

Honorary Air Force Commandant of the Royal Air Force Base Honington and
Honorary Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Naval Commands’ Small Ships and Diving.

Although Princess Anne was expected to take over the honorary title, King Charles III has appointed himself as the Captain General of the Royal Marines.

Queen Elizabeth II, 96, an epitome of elegance, and a sense of humour, dies at Balmoral Castle, Scotland
