His Majesty King Charles III recently visited Herefordshire and paid a visit to the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC). The college is celebrating its 150th birthday. He met the staff, the students and the volunteers at the college in Hereford. The visit brought back memories as he had opened the same site in 1979, when he was the Prince of Wales. The college was first established in London, in 1872.
King Charles, the patron of the college, arrived in the Venns Lane site just before 1 p.m. BT, on December 12. He was greeted at the college by local dignitaries.
He met the staff, students and volunteers and also said Hello to a guide dog. The visually impaired students showed the skills they were acquiring including learning Braille as well as giving an aromatherapy hand massage.
Students also played a game of blind football and the RNC team scored a goal. The players used sound to help them play. The monarch enquired about how they fitted sports into their academic and social lives.
The king saw demonstrations of the various advances that have been made to transform the lives of the students who study at RNC. The broad curriculum includes traditional A levels as well as vocational training.
King Charles laughed when he looked at the photographs taken of him, at the college, in 1979. He said, “Gosh, all those years ago.”
King Charles III expressed his regret that he had taken so long to visit and commended the college for being “fully committed to the values reflected in its motto; education, employment, empowerment.”
He also said that he was impressed by the “personal confidence and skills demonstrated by the students” and “the sense of community” that was “reflected in the long service of the staff” whom he was “very glad” to have met and more.
King Charles III concluded the visit by unveiling a plaque that commemorated the occasion. He was presented with a blind football, as a memento by the Royal National College for the Blind. Fans around the world are super excited.
