On Wednesday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said that a woman had been kidnapped in Seattle and driven over state borders to Oregon by a man who said that he was an undercover police officer. She was imprisoned in a makeshift cell that he built in his garage. However, she managed to escape and a motorist who was passing by called 911.
The suspect,29-year-old Negasi Zuberi, who has several aliases, has been charged with federal interstate kidnapping. Law enforcement authorities said that were looking for more victims as he has been linked to sexual assault in at least four other states in the nation.
Stephanie Shark, the assistant special agent in charge at the FBI’s field office in Portland said that the woman, who has been identified as Adult Victim 1 had been “kidnapped, chained, sexually assaulted and locked in a cinderblock cell.”
The news release also noted that police had said that she had beaten the door with her hands till she could break free despite suffering from bloody hands. It also noted that her “quick thinking and will to survive” might have saved other women from the same potential nightmare.
Assistant special agent Stephanie Shark also said, “Sadly, we believe there are more victims.”
A criminal complaint was filed against Negasi Zuberi in the U.S. District Court in Oregon. It stated that Zuberi solicited an adult woman at Aurora Avenue, an area that is known for sex work. He engaged the woman in the early hours of July 15. He later told her that he was an undercover officer.
Zuberi showed the woman a badge, pointed a stun gun at her, put handcuffs and leg irons on her before putting her on the back of his vehicle. He drove from Seattle to Oregon, where he has a home. He stopped during the roughly seven-hour journey and sexually assaulted her.
After they reached Oregon, he put her in a makeshift cinderblock cell that had a door made of metal bars, in his residence, in Klamath Falls. He told her he was leaving to complete paperwork.
The compliant said that the woman slept for a while and realized that she needed to escape or she would die. She banged on the door, broke it, and escaped over a wooden fence after taking Zuberi’s gun from his car. She flagged a motorist who called 911 and she was taken to a hospital.

The next day, Zuberi was tracked to a parking lot in Walmart in Reno, Nevada. He was in the front seat with one of his children, while his wife was standing outside the vehicle. Two Nevada State Patrol officers asked him to exit the vehicle.
Zuberi initially refused to leave the car. Instead, he cut himself with a sharp object. He also tried to break his phone. After some time, he surrendered, and his child remained unharmed.
The FBI has asked anyone who has information about Negasi Zuberi to contact them. His other aliases include Sakima Zuberi, Justin Kouassi, and Justin Hyche. The maximum charge for interstate kidnapping is life in prison.
