Kentucky sophomore forward Ugonna Onyenso suffered a broken foot that required surgery and will sideline him for roughly two months.
Kentucky coach John Calipari made the announcement Tuesday, saying in a tweet that Onyenso “underwent a successful minor procedure that will keep him out for a couple of months.”
Calipari said Sunday that Onyenso was “gonna be out a while” but didn’t disclose the nature of the injury. Onyenso sustained the injury during a closed scrimmage last week against Team Africa.
Kentucky just came off winning the gold medal at the 2023 GLOBL Jam Tournament in Toronto. The Wildcats beat Team Canada in the finale.
Onyenso played in 16 games (no starts) as a freshman, averaging 2.5 points and 6.9 minutes per game.
He joins center Aaron Bradshaw on the shelf. Bradshaw also suffered a broken foot but Calipari said he’s optimistic the five-star freshman will be ready for the start of the season.
