Kellogg’s Co. (K) has announced the new name of its global snacking business. The business, which includes popular brands Cheez-It, Pop-Tarts, Pringles and others, will be called Kellanova. The new name that was announced on Wednesday will come into being after a spinoff of its North American cereal unit. The cereal unit will be called WK Kellogg Co, after its founder. It will include brands such as Kellogg’s, Fruit Loops and Rice Krispies. Founder W.K. Kellogg created Corn Flakes, in 1894.
According to Kellogg’s, the new name combines “Kell” from Kellogg and “anova” from the Latin word nova which means “new.” It said that the snack division’s name reflected both the past and the future of the company.
The Battle Creek, Michigan headquartered company had initially considered three spinoffs but changed its strategy in February. It said that its MorningStar Farms labels will remain in-house and will now be a part of Kellanova. The snack division will also consist of international cereal brands such as Frosties, Zucaritas, and Miel Pops.

The company announced that Kellanova would continue to trade with the “K” ticker symbol on the New York Stock Exchange. It will announce the ticker and the exchange details for WK Kellogg Co in the next few months and both the companies will be publicly traded.
Kellogg’s said that it expects to complete the spinoff by the end of the year. However, the same “Kellogg’s” brand will be seen on the packaging of all the products, all over the world.

Kellogg said that it had asked its employees to come up with ideas for new names of the two spinoffs. About one fifth of the roughly 4,000 suggestions received included variations of the founder W.K. Kellogg’s name for the cereal unit.
