When voting began in LA, former Republican (2019) turned Independent, recently turned Democrat (February 2022 as per the NYT) Rick Caruso took an overnight lead over the presidential endorsed, longtime Democrat Karen Bass. However, Bass, who is set to create multiple records for the Democrats if she wins, closed the gap and took the lead after that and has been maintaining and increasing her lead over Caruso and we project her as the ultimate winner.
Democratic Mayor Eric Garcetti is term limited. He is waiting for confirmation as ambassador to India, while Karen Bass or Rick Caruso are hoping to take this important leadership position in California, which majorly votes blue.
Election officials say that the counting could take several days. The latest figures, after 70 percent of the votes have been counted indicate that Karen Bass has 375,143 votes or 52.55 percent while Rick Caruso has 338, 794 or 47.45 percent of the vote, according to the latest data from the Los Angeles County Registrar’s Office. She has 36,000 more votes than Caruso.
Although the Associated Press and LA Times have not called the vote as yet, nor has Caruso conceded, it is almost certain that Karen Bass will soon create history by becoming the first black woman to be elected as the Mayor of the City of Angeles.
Los Angeles has never had a woman as mayor before. It has elected only one Black man as mayor. Although the path to creating history among Angelenos might take several days, many including CWeb News estimate that the longtime Washington lawmaker will remain ahead of the billionaire businessman. Political observers have also said that the chances of Rick Caruso, who became a Democrat less than a year ago, to win the mayoral race, are getting slimmer as time is passing.
