Kansas guard Arterio Morris has been charged with rape and removed from the team.

Morris previously was suspended from the Jayhawks as the alleged sexual assault was investigated.

“When we learned of allegations regarding Arterio Morris, he was suspended from the Kansas men’s basketball program,” coach Bill Self said in a statement emailed to the Journal-World in Lawrence, Kan., Friday morning. “We are now aware he has been arrested and charged, and he was dismissed from the program. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are not able to comment further at this time.”

Morris, 20, was charged in Douglas County (Kan.) District Court with one felony count of rape. The charge is connected to an incident that an 18-year-old woman said occurred on Aug. 26 at McCarthy Hall on campus.

Morris was taken into custody at 7:13 a.m. local time on Friday and released on a $75,000 surety bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 18.

Three teammates potentially are witnesses or have information to offer in the case, according to police reports.

In June 2022, Morris was charged with misdemeanor assault for an alleged altercation with an ex-girlfriend in Texas but was not suspended by the University of Texas.

Morris transferred to Kansas after his freshman season at Texas, when the 6-foot-3 guard averaged 4.6 points, 1.4 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.7 steals and 11.8 minutes as a reserve in 38 games. He had yet to play in a regular-season game for the Jayhawks.

Morris was the No. 16 overall player and the No. 1 point guard in the 2022 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He is from DeSoto, Texas.

Kansas already has removed Morris from its online roster.
