Kansas coach Bill Self was hospitalized Monday and did not make the trip with his team to Boulder, Colo., for Tuesday night’s Big 12 Conference game at Colorado.

“Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self felt under the weather earlier today and, out of an abundance of caution, was taken to (Lawrence Memorial Hospital) where he received IV fluids,” the program said in a statement. “He is feeling better but did not accompany the team to Boulder.”

Medical dispatch records included a call to Allen Fieldhouse regarding someone experiencing chest pain, KUhearings.com reported, though that does not equate to an official diagnosis.

Kansas did not say whether Self had been released from the hospital, or who would coach the 19th-ranked Jayhawks against Colorado. Jeremy Case is the associate head coach.

Self, 63, has dealt with health episodes in recent years, most notably before the 2023 Big 12 tournament. He was hospitalized with chest tightness, had two stents inserted to address blocked arteries and missed five games in all, including the Big 12 tournament and the NCAA Tournament.

Last July, Self was admitted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with what the program at the time called “some concerning symptoms” and received two more stents.

Self has won two national championships (2008, 2022) and taken Kansas to four Final Fours since being hired in 2003. The Jayhawks are 13-5 (3-2 Big 12) and recently re-entered the AP Top 25 poll after thrashing previously unbeaten and second-ranked Iowa State 84-63.
