A New York judge has determined that former President Donald Trump is liable in the defamation action brought against him by E. Jean Carroll, which is a huge legal blow for him. The verdict is a major setback for Trump’s legal strategy and opens a new chapter in the ongoing legal scuffles surrounding his presidency.
Trump was charged with sexual assault by notable author and journalist E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s. In response, Trump denied the accusations and said in the open that Carroll was “totally lying” to promote her book. Carroll then sued Trump for defamation on the grounds that his remarks had harmed her reputation.
The next trial for Carroll’s civil action against Trump, according to Judge Lewis Kaplan, will only address the issue of how much the former president should pay Carroll in monetary damages.
In a second case, a jury in federal court in Manhattan concluded in May that Trump had harassed Carroll last November and had sexually assaulted her during an encounter in a New York department store in the middle of the 1990s.
Following the judge’s recent decision, the lawsuit will move on to the next phase, when Trump can be asked for testimony and might potentially face more legal repercussions. This incident highlights the difficulties and legal issues that the former president is still dealing with even after leaving office.
