Judge H Patrick Haggard found Jose Ibarra guilty of all the 10 counts he faced in a bench trial. The undocumented immigrant from Venezuela was handed life in prison for the murder of Laken Riley. The judge also sentenced him to life without parole. The case hit the headlines because of its brutality as well as due to the connection between crime and illegal immigration.

Victim Laken Riley’s family and friends, who were in court during the sentencing by the judge as Ibarra faced a bench trial (a trial by the judge without a jury, seemed to be relieved after they heard the judge’s sentence.

The prosecution did not ask for the death penalty. Ibarra faced punishment for all the ten counts he was charged with and has been sentenced to two life sentences plus 27 years in prison.

Laken Riley’s mother, stepfather, sister, and friends expressed their deep emotions and anguish in front of the judge. Prosecutor Sheila Ross had urged the judge for a life without parole sentence as she did not want Laken Riley’s younger sister, Lauren Philips, to face future litigation.

As reported earlier by CWEB news, Jose Antonio Ibarra, an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela, was charged with the killing of Laken Riley. She was jogging through the woods. The former University of Georgia student, an avid jogger, was jogging in the Oconee Forest Park.

Unfortunately for Riley, on the morning of February 22, 26-year-old Jose Ibarra, who entered the U.S. illegally, attacked Riley with a rock and then asphyxiated her. The nursing student reportedly fiercely resisted his attempt to rape her and was killed by him.

Jose Ibarra was arrested from an apartment complex nearby on February 23. The investigators found a blue jacket thrown by him in a dumpster that had his and Riley’s DNA. Prosecutors also said that DNA from Ibarra was found under Riley’s fingernails. They also furnished digital evidence that connected him to the crime.

Judge Haggard examined all the evidence and sentenced him on Wednesday.
