A Florida man who was arrested last month has been discovered to possess a massive stash of child pornography, which detectives described as the “largest they have ever seen.” Officers arrested Jonathan Jhovanny Hernandez on suspicion of having a large collection of child porn and expected to find even more incriminating evidence in the devices seized from him. But what law enforcement officers discovered astounded them.
The sheriff’s office opened an investigation into Hernandez in August after the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children shared a cyber tip about computer crimes against children. Police used a search warrant to gain access to his Discord (an instant messaging service) account and discovered child pornographic content there. Highlands County Sheriff’s Office revealed that his detective “say Hernandez’s collection of child porn is the largest they have ever seen.”
Deputies discovered 15 electronic devices during a search of his Avon Park home on December 29th, according to the Miami Herald. Highland County deputies have described Jonathan Hernandez’s collection of child porn as the largest they’ve ever seen.
He was previously only charged with possessing child pornography, conveying child pornography, and using a two-way communication device to commit a felony. When Hernandez was released on bond, investigators discovered enough evidence on one of his 15 devices to charge him with an additional 1,182 counts of child porn possession. The sheriff’s office claims that if detectives go through all of the devices, “there is no telling how many charges he could face.” He was arrested on Wednesday, January 11 once more on the new charges.
In Florida, there are far-reaching consequences with severe penalties for a conviction for child pornography-reaching consequences. Any visual representation of a minor engaging in sexual conduct is child pornography under Florida law. If found guilty, the defendant faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine for each illegal material or minor depicted in the image, video, or data.
